Indigo was contracted to provide the hospital car park building and management for the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
We began the competitive tender process for this PFI project in November 2005. Having been appointed preferred bidder in September 2007, we submitted our plans to Gloucester City Council on 7th August 2008 and got the green light on the 23rd December 2009. The end result was a uniquely designed multi-storey car park which was built in just 363 days. The car park opened on time and to budget on the 11th April 2011.
Managing hospital car park building across two sites
The new hospital car park building provides 1,003 spaces at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. However, we also manage a further 1,350 spaces spread over more than 23 surface car parks, across two hospital sites in Cheltenham and Gloucester.
We took over the parking management of the car parks at both hospital sites before building work on the new multi-storey began. This gave us a thorough understanding of the car park users and the complexities of the site and ensured minimal disruption once building work had begun.
The very latest technology
Our knowledge of the users of both hospital sites added real value at the design and build stage of the new multi-storey car park. We incorporated the best technology to provide a smoother parking experience.
This included an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) system which recognises number plates and reduces congestion at the barriers. We also installed variable message signs (VMS) to tell users about space availability, and three pay-on-foot stations which take Chip & Pin cards, as well as notes and coins.
Enhancing convenience and security
Before the new hospital car park building opened, the hospital used 420 trust spaces locally. Now, with an on-site focal point for parking, patients, visitors and staff have a far more convenient and safer facility. A purpose-built parking shop based in the multi-storey ensures an outstanding personal service.
